Medical Copy Editor

Position Description – Medical Copy Editor works closely with the managing editor and team to prepare diagnosis summary manuscripts for publication, including tracking them through the open peer review process in accordance with deadlines and entering data into a proprietary content management system for the development and maintenance of referenced electronic knowledge databases. Medical Copy Editor reports to Managing Editor.


Bachelor’s degree from a 4-year college or university, or 1-2 years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience; medical interest a plus; proofreading skills; strong attention to detail; MS Office.

Essential Duties and Reponsibilites:

  • Developing competency with editorial style (American Medical Association), copyright issues, and publishing processes.
  • Developing familiarity with medical terminology and lexicons.
  • Developing familiarity in reading common scientific and medical journals.
  • Copyediting medical manuscripts and other materials for grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax and preferred usage, and clarity.
  • Submitting manuscripts to licensed anti-plagiarism software to ensure compliance with editorial policy.
  • Communicating with physician authors and editors on writing, reviews, corrections, revisions, resubmissions, acceptances, and other editorial tasks.
  • Tracking manuscripts through the editorial process, maintaining accurate and specific records of writing and review assignments and correspondence.
  • Developing competency in understanding and using the corporate knowledge repository.
  • Working with editorial staff to finalize and review quality of content before each software release, including proofreading copyedited pages.
  • Maintaining records of work progress.
  • Attending staff meetings.
