Fever, Chills, Coughing Up Blood, Exotic Bird? - Can You Diagnose?


A 37-year-old man went to urgent care with flu-like symptoms of fever, chills and muscle aches, and a dry, hacking cough. He had noticed some small drops of blood on his hand when he coughed, which concerned him a lot. When the doctor listened to his lungs, she heard crackles. She asked if he had traveled recently. He said no, but he had just acquired an exotic bird – a macaw – about a week ago from a friend living abroad in South America.
