Medical Student Compares Patient Nevus to VisualDx Images; Catches Melanoma In Situ

Daniel N., a medical student studying internal medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School, shares his story about comparing his patient’s presentation to images in VisualDx and alerted his attending to a malignant melanoma.

“During clinic in my family medicine clerkship, a young African American woman came in complaining of a changing nevus on her forearm. After examining it, I made my case to the attending I was with that it needed a careful biopsy, since I was concerned it wasn’t benign. I used VisualDx to show how other, similar examples ended up being melanomas. A biopsy was obtained, and eventually confirmed she had a cutaneous melanoma, fortunately in situ.”
