Scientist Returns from Japan Trip w/ Rash, Fever, Chills – Let’s Diagnose

A 60-year-old scientist returned to the U.S. about a week ago after studying the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest in Japan. He went to urgent care complaining of a fever, chills, diffuse blanching macular rash, myalgias, and headache. The rash had spread across his body, including the palms of his hands and soles of his feet. His doctor noted an eschar on the back of one leg. He was sure he’d been bitten by a few different bugs in Japan since he spent most of his time outdoors, but he couldn’t positively identify them.
