VisualDx Helps Identify Young Baseball Player’s Swelling in ER

Sonia S. Ferguson, a pediatrician at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, used VisualDx to identify her patient’s swelling.

“9 yr old baseball player presented to the ER with redness, swelling along the left scrotum. Was itchy initially but later was edematous, red, warm and painful. Was admitted for scrotal cellulitis on IV clindamycin. After 24 hrs, the area started draining yellowish pus with some superficial necrosis. Wound culture revealed, E coli scrotal cellulitis. In retrospect, the boy admitted to wearing new protective gear, had a bowel movement during the game and he did not clean well as he wanted to return to play as soon as possible.”
