Synopsis

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (acute lymphocytic leukemia, acute lymphoid leukemia, ALL) is a common cancer of B or T lymphoblasts characterized by an accumulation of immature lymphocytes in bone marrow and blood. Subtype of acute leukemia. ALL progresses rapidly and may metastasize to the lymph nodes, liver, spleen, brain, spine, and testicles. Typically found in children but also occurs in adults. Common findings include fever, ecchymosis, bleeding, bone pain, lymphadenopathy, fatigue, dyspnea, reoccurring infections, dizziness, mental status alteration, and weight loss. Clinical suspicion should be aroused when these symptoms persist. Associated with Down syndrome, neurofibromatosis type 1, Bloom syndrome, and ataxia telangiectasia.

Treatment includes chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and stem cell transplantation.
