An acute alcohol toxicity syndrome related often to binge drinking, characterized by left ventricular (LV) dilatation, decreased ejection fraction, and reduced cardiac output. It is usually reversible with cessation of alcohol consumption early in the disease course. Symptoms (dyspnea with exercise, orthopnea, and paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea) are those of dilated cardiomyopathy and LV systolic dysfunction of any etiology. Patients can experience palpitations and fainting spells that can be confused for alcohol intoxication.
