Synopsis

An uncommon disease usually found in adolescents and young adults, especially athletes (the typical patient is an adolescent male who plays sports). Characterized by separation of osseous fragment at the posterior cephalad or caudad edge of the adjacent vertebral body. Often accompanied by lumbar disk herniation. May be associated with Scheuermann disease. Can present with back pain, muscle weakness, muscle spasm, and/or sciatica.
