Synopsis

An affective disorder characterized by severe mood swings involving episodes of mania, hypomania, and major depression, with a tendency to remission and recurrence. There are two subtypes:
  • Bipolar I – Patients experience manic episodes, and in most cases they also experience major depressive and hypomanic episodes.
  • Bipolar II – Patients experience at least one hypomanic episode and at least one major depressive episode, but do not have manic episodes.
