Synopsis

A condition resulting from insufficient supply of oxygen to meet metabolic demand in the myocardium. Potential causes include arterial obstruction of blood flow (ie, atherosclerotic coronary stenosis, embolic events, vasospasm, coronary artery dissection, or microvascular coronary disease), hypoxemia due to respiratory disease, or a significant increase in metabolic demand such as in the setting of severe sepsis. Severe ischemia may result in necrosis of cardiac muscle (myocardial infarction).
