Synopsis

The cervix can be examined with speculum examination and should be done under anesthesia on a young child. An older child who has not commenced sexual activity may find it painful and uncomfortable, and the experience may be traumatic.

Examination of the cervix/speculum examination is not a routine part of the medical evalutaion of child sexual abuse.
