Synopsis

Infection caused by the O'nyong-nyong virus, an alphavirus closely related to the Chikungunya virus. Cases have been reported in Africa, including Uganda and the Ivory Coast. The virus is spread to humans from a mosquito vector. Most patients who seek medical care report fever, a maculopapular rash, pruritus, myalgias, and arthralgias. Diagnosis can be made by polymerase chain reaction, but this test is usually only available in reference laboratories.
