Synopsis

Scopulariopsis brevicaulis is a nondermatophyte mold that is ubiquitous in the soil. S brevicaulis may invade nail keratins and cause onychomycosis, typically of a single toenail. Mixed infection with a dermatophyte (Trichophyton rubrum or Trichophyton interdigitale) occurs frequently.

Infection has been traced to walking barefoot in endemic areas. Onychomycosis due to S brevicaulis has not been associated with systemic disease.
