Synopsis

Adulterated cooking oil caused a syndrome with 20 000 cases of illness and even death in Spain in 1981. It caused an acute flu-like illness with interstitial pneumonitis. In about 15% of patients, this became a chronic syndrome. The exact chemical cause is still being debated.
