People who have vaginal agenesis usually have normal secondary sex characteristics due to the presence of hormonally functioning ovaries.
Vaginal agenesis is a cause of primary amenorrhea. Patients may also have cyclic abdominal pain if there is shedding of the endometrium that cannot be adequately expelled. Vaginal agenesis is often treated surgically to allow for improved sexual function. There are also nonsurgical methods available to increase the size of the vagina.
