Synopsis

Xanthelasma palpebrarum is a type of plane xanthoma of the eyelids, and it is the most common type of xanthoma, in general. Xanthomas are yellow to orange macules, plaques, and papules containing lipid-rich deposits. Histologically, they represent the accumulation of lipid-containing, foamy macrophages in the dermis. Approximately half of patients with xanthomas have a lipid disorder; the remainder are normolipemic patients. Women are affected more than men. Xanthelasma usually occur in patients aged over 50. Although xanthomas themselves are often asymptomatic, investigations into and treatment of any underlying cause(s) are warranted to prevent morbidity from lipid disorders and to prevent xanthelasma from progressing.
