Pseudoverrucous irritant peristomal dermatitis is a benign skin condition that manifests as verrucous papules or plaques around a stoma site. This condition most commonly occurs around a urostomy, although it has been documented to occur around ileostomies and colostomies. If at a urostomy site, prolonged exposure to alkaline urine with secondary uric acid deposition is thought to be causative. This leads to chronic irritation and the subsequent epidermal changes.

This is typically a late peristomal complication. Risk factors for the development of pseudoverrucous irritant peristomal dermatitis include anything that creates an irregularity in the stoma site and subsequently interferes with securing a seal, such as improper sizing / placement of skin barrier, poorly positioned or constructed stoma, obesity, postoperative stoma complications (ie, mucocutaneous separation, stoma necrosis, stoma retraction, prolapse, and hernia), or the stoma positioned beyond the patient's visual field. The pseudoverrucous lesions themselves can interfere with the seal, which continues the cycle.

Pseudoverrucous irritant peristomal dermatitis tends to be asymptomatic, although the lesions have been associated with bleeding and pain.
