Synopsis

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a malignant growth usually seen at the 3 or 9 o'clock limbus on older individuals. Sun exposure is thought to play a large role in the pathogenesis of SCC, but viral infections have also been known to increase the etiology. An increased incidence in SCC has also been noted in HIV-infected individuals. SCC can arise from an area of carcinoma in situ on the conjunctiva or limbal cornea.
