Synopsis

Bowenoid papulosis is a low-grade squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in situ caused by the human papillomavirus, usually subtypes 16, 18, 32 and 33. It typically occurs in patients between 20 and 40 years of age.

It may be considered to be a transitional state between a genital wart and Bowen's disease. The features of the bowenoid papules are somewhere in between the features of condyloma acuminata and other SCC in situ (Bowen's disease and erythroplasia of Queyrat). Lesions on the penis are usually asymptomatic.

Bowenoid papulosis largely follows a benign course. Because the papules of this condition have a lesser degree of atypia than those seen in Bowen's disease and erythroplasia of Queyrat, they have a lower risk of progressing to invasive SCC. However, if left untreated for several years, the chance of a malignant change increases.
