Synopsis

Chandipura virus is an enveloped RNA virus of the rhabdovirus family. It is a rare cause of infectious encephalitis in children. Symptoms are typically influenza-like but neurologic impairment and a lethal autoimmune encephalitis may subsequently develop.

It is primarily epidemic in India and transmitted through mosquitoes and sandflies.

No specific treatments are available, but mannitol is often used to reduce lethal cerebral edema.
