Cosmetic-induced acne presents as closed comedones on the cheeks and chin. Other areas of the face may also be involved. Open comedones may be seen. Occasionally, small inflamed papules and pustules occur. Cosmetic-induced acne can have a long course and waxing and waning may occur, depending on cosmetic regimens used.

Differential Diagnosis & Pitfalls
- Acne vulgaris
- Actinic comedones – Presents as large blackheads in the periorbital region as a result of chronic sun exposure; more common among older individuals of Northern European descent.
- Pomade acne
- Occupational acne – Presents as open and closed comedones with noninflamed nodules and cysts caused by exposure to oils, halogenated polycyclic hydrocarbons, and frictional trauma.
