Synopsis

Costochondritis is a common, benign cause of chest pain. Its onset can be acute or subacute. Pain is typically dull and exacerbated by movement, palpation, and inspiration. It is often caused by repeated mild trauma or overuse, although a specific inciting incident is not always known. The underlying pathology of costochondritis is inflammation of the costosternal joints. Treatment is focused on symptomatic pain control, as costochondritis is self-limited.
