Synopsis

Four main disorders are seen in hairdressers:
- Chronic paronychia
- Nail plate pigmentation that occurs from the use of certain dyes and results in pigmentation in any nail that has come in contact with the dye
- Contact dermatitis from shampoos or other products, which can present as koilonychia or as red, scaly plaques in a periungual distribution
- Trichogranulomas, which result from the implantation of hair beneath the nail plate; trichogranulomas present as subungual thickening, onycholysis, and visible hairs

Differential Diagnosis & Pitfalls
- Contact with hyacinth or narcissus bulbs (raphide cells containing bundles of needle-shaped crystals of calcium oxalate)
- Glass fibers (penetration of glass spicules beneath the proximal nail fold)
- Onychomycosis
- Other causes of dermatitis of nail folds
- Drug-induced nail pigment change
- Subacute bacterial endocarditis
- Anemia
- Longitudinal melanonychia due to melanin
