Synopsis
Lichen simplex chronicus (LSC; also known as neurodermatitis circumscripta) is characterized by lichenification of the skin that is induced by chronic rubbing and/or scratching. LSC can be associated with atopic dermatitis. However, often the itching is of an unknown cause. Individual papules may be observed as well (prurigo nodularis).
LSC of the scrotum or penis is associated with habitual rubbing and scratching of the area. It can complicate genital candidiasis, lichen sclerosus, lichen planus, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, and squamous cell carcinoma. LSC is a chronic disorder that often affects older individuals, but involvement of the genital area can occur throughout adulthood.
