Synopsis
Lichen simplex chronicus (LSC) is also known as neurodermatitis circumscripta. It is a thickening of the skin associated with lichenification. Lichenification means that the thickened skin has enhanced skin markings resulting from the friction of excessive scratching and rubbing secondary to itching. This skin finding can be associated with atopic dermatitis. Many times the itching is of an unknown cause. Individual papules may be observed as well (prurigo nodularis). If pruritus is generalized, consider systemic causes such as renal, thyroid, hematologic, or hepatic causes or medications.
LSC of the vulva is associated with habitual rubbing and scratching . LSC can complicate vulvar candidiasis, lichen sclerosus, lichen planus, psoriasis, contact dermatitis and squamous cell carcinoma in situ.
LSC is a chronic disorder that often affects older patients, but LSC in the vulval area can occur throughout adulthood.
