Synopsis

An uncommon polypoid proliferation of chronic inflammatory cells and granulation tissue that develops due to a long-standing inflammatory, often infectious, condition of the middle ear. Benign in nature. Also called aural polyp, symptoms may include hearing loss, and otorrhea, otalgia, bleeding, and ear mass sensation.

Management may call for antibiotics, drainage, or aural polypectomy to rule out cholesteatoma. Researchers note that otic polyp histology is not a reliable predictor of cholesteatomatous disease.
