Synopsis

Inflammation of the periosteum, the covering of bones. Generally chronic, but may be acute.
  • Chronic – Manifests with tenderness and swelling of the bone and an aching pain, and may be due to systemic inflammatory disorders.
  • Noninfectious acute – Shin splints in athletes is a common cause.
  • Infectious acute – Typically manifests with diffuse suppuration, severe pain, and systemic symptoms; it often results in necrosis.
