Synopsis

Subconjunctival hemorrhage is a common condition that can develop after orbital trauma, increased venous pressure, or spontaneously. Subconjunctival hemorrhage is rarely associated with systemic disease or a defect in the clotting cascade. Patients can be of any age and often notice a red spot in the eye upon looking in the mirror or are made aware of the situation by someone else. Though the redness can be quite dramatic and frightening, generally, little to no pain is noted by patients unless associated with orbital or ocular trauma.
