Synopsis

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted acute vaginitis caused by the unicellular protozoal flagellate Trichomonas vaginalis. In women, symptoms of trichomoniasis include vaginal discharge, itching, and odor. Trichomonas vaginalis vaginal infections are linked epidemiologically to premature rupture of membranes, early delivery, HIV transmission, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Trichomoniasis is the most common nonviral sexually transmitted infection, affecting an estimated 2.1% of young women in the United States, with the highest rates in Black women.
