Synopsis

Leiomyomas, or leiomyomata, are benign solitary or multiple smooth muscle tumors that are frequently painful or tender. A subtype of leiomyomas is the solitary genital leiomyoma, which likely arises from dartoic muscle tissue. Leiomyomas found on the skin are also known as piloleiomyomas. They arise from arrector pili muscle within the hair follicle unit. Multiple leiomyomas are more common than solitary leiomyomas and are most likely to be found on the extremities. Leiomyomas are also found on the trunk and face. Pain can be present with or without external pressure, trauma, or touch. Leiomyomas typically occur in the second or third decade and are sometimes familial. Inheritance is usually autosomal dominant with incomplete penetrance. Males and females are equally affected. Female patients with leiomyomas are at risk for uterine leiomyomas or rarely leiomyosarcoma. Heritable multiple cutaneous and uterine leiomyomatosis syndrome is also known as Reed syndrome.
