Veterans Affairs Selects VisualDx Mobile App for Its Hospitals and Clinics

Marks Third Year in a Row That the VA Has Chosen VisualDx to Support Its Healthcare Professionals

ROCHESTER, NY, March 25, 2013 – Logical Images, Inc. announced today that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) chose the medical technology company’s widely used mobile app and online resource, VisualDx, for the third year in a row to provide fast and accurate diagnostic support to healthcare professionals who serve more than 8.3 million veterans annually in the VA’s 152 hospitals, more than 700 outpatient clinics and other facilities.

The VA operates the nation’s largest integrated healthcare system, and VisualDx has been providing the web-based clinical decision support system to the department’s healthcare providers since 2010.

“We are proud to serve the men and women who have served our country in our armed forces,” said Art Papier, MD, Logical Images CEO. “With VisualDx, the VA’s healthcare providers can quickly and accurately diagnose disease and then educate and empower veterans and their family members by showing them images and information in an easy-to-use and easy-to-understand format on a smart phone or tablet.”

During appointments or at the bedside, physicians enter a patient’s symptoms, medical history and other information into VisualDx. Based on the information entered, VisualDx quickly delivers a highly accurate list of potential diagnoses, a series of photographs against which to match the patient’s current conditions and the recommended treatments. The physician can then work through the list to arrive at the best diagnosis, explain the process to the patient and decide on the right treatment for each patient.

Created by physicians for physicians, the VisualDx database includes an exhaustive library of more than 100,000 peer-reviewed medical images with a special emphasis on covering all different ages, skin types and skin color. It also provides diagnoses and treatments for more than 1,200 diagnoses. It is available as an online and mobile resource that works with the iPhone, Android and iPad.

VisualDx covers dermatology and a whole lot more. Dr. Neil Evans, associate chief of staff for informatics and co-chief of primary care at the Washington, D.C. VA Medical Center, told healthcare providers and others during a September conference call that VisualDx is essentially a massive medical image atlas that fits in their pocket and is far larger than any paper atlas.

“It is an outstanding visual clinical decision-support tool which allows you to build differential diagnosis of visual findings in medicine,” he said during the call.

VisualDx is the only diagnostic decision support system to be widely adopted by clinicians nationally, with almost half the nation’s medical schools and more than 1,500 hospitals and large clinics relying on it to reduce medical error by ensuring accurate diagnoses.

“The VA was one of the first large healthcare providers to adopt electronic medical records, and it is once again showing thought leadership and innovation by choosing to renew its VisualDx license for a third year,” said Noah Craft, MD, PhD, Logical Images chief medical officer. “For the VA and all healthcare providers, VisualDx is an affordable and scientifically proven system that will help educate patients and reduce medical errors by providing fast and accurate diagnoses.”
