Quick Q&A with VisualDx CEO Dr. Art Papier: What’s exciting about the new VisualDx?

We caught up with Dr. Papier this week to ask him a couple VisualDx questions ahead of the launch of the new version on March 1.

Q: What is the most exciting thing about VisualDx?

A: The new VisualDx is expanding across general medicine so we’re going from 1,300 diagnoses in the current VisualDx to have differential diagnosis across 2,700 or more diagnoses. The new VisualDx is going to include Sympticons. These are graphical representations of the patterns of symptoms and other findings. This is a revolutionary change because other efforts in diagnostic support have given users a list of diagnoses. With these Sympticons, you’re going to be able to compare the features of each diagnosis on one screen. The new system is also going to have guided chief complaint questionnaires which means if you’re seeing a patient with an unusual symptom, VisualDx will remind you of the key questions to ask your patient. In addition to new diagnoses and chief complaint questionnaires, VisualDx is also going to include many more images including radiologic images.

Q: Why was it important to expand the product to cover general medicine?

A: At VisualDx we are passionate about improving diagnosis across medicine.  Expanding VisualDx to include differential diagnosis for any patient complaint was a logical next step.

Q: Who benefits from the new VisualDx?

A: We have many primary care, emergency, hospitalist clinicians who will immediately benefit from the expansion of VisualDx.

Q: Why is tackling the issue of misdiagnosis so important?

A: 10-20% of all diagnoses are wrong. There is tremendous waste in our healthcare system when clinicians order unnecessary tests, imaging studies, empirically treat with the wrong medication for the wrong diagnosis and refer to the wrong specialist. Quality care begins with an accurate diagnosis.  If we can drive more accurate diagnosis, we can reduce harm and save money.
