CVICU Nurse Unfamiliar with Skin Diseases Uses VisualDx to Accurately Diagnose Toddler

Neha, a University of Iowa student studying to become a family nurse practitioner, shares her story about using VisualDx in clinic.

“I took care of a young 2-year-old boy at clinic as an NP student. The grandma was concerned about the rashes that were present throughout his body. They didn’t present as classic impetigo symptoms, but my suspicion was high. As a CVICU nurse, impetigo is not something I am very familiar with. His groin area was reddened and very irritated. The infant was irritable and crying. I included all of the symptoms and signs into VisualDx and found that this was most likely a MRSA infection. To my surprise, it was. We treated for MRSA and the lesions resolved within a week. Using VisualDx allowed me to differentiate between similar conditions and choose the one that was most appropriate as it was a visual.”
