JT Finnell

Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Finnell is chief medical officer at VisualDx. He has previously served as the chief medical information officer for emergency medicine at Eskenazi Health and chief architect for several emergency department clinical information systems; a research scientist at the Regenstrief Institute, Inc., and professor of clinical emergency medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Dr. Finnell was recently selected as a fellow into the ACMI, a college of elected Fellows from the U.S. and abroad who have made significant and sustained contributions to the field of medical informatics. It is the central body for a community of scholars and practitioners who are committed to advancing the informatics field.

Dr. Finnell has spent the last several years developing and implementing clinical systems and evaluating their value. Working with Dr. Clement McDonald, one of the pioneers of medical informatics, he has studied the electronic patient record (called the Indiana Network for Patient Care) containing data from many sources including laboratories, pharmacies, and hospitals in central Indiana. The system currently connects nearly all acute care hospitals in central Indiana and includes inpatient and outpatient encounter data, laboratory results, immunization data, and other selected data.

Dr. Finnell earned his BS in Biology and MD from the University of Vermont. I was a chief resident in emergency medicine at the University of San Francisco-Fresno, and later completed a master’s degree in clinical research, and medical informatics fellowship at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
