$3 Million Effort to Improve Diagnostic Accuracy

Boston, MA (NOVEMBER 28, 2018) – Diagnosis-related events are the single largest root cause of medical professional liability claims, according to the Coverys report, Dose of Insight: Diagnostic Accuracy – Room for Improvement.

With the wealth of claims data supporting the findings of the report, the Coverys Community Healthcare Foundation, Inc. (Foundation) put out a call to action and distributed a request for proposals for projects focused on improving diagnostic accuracy. The Foundation put aside $3 million in funding for approved projects. Through this process, the Foundation hoped to stimulate projects that demonstrate new approaches and have the greatest potential to produce replicable processes for achieving prompt and accurate diagnosis.

“Diagnostic error touches many in the healthcare continuum, from patients and their family members to hospitals and healthcare providers,” said Donna M. Norris, MD, Coverys board member and chair of the Coverys Charitable Giving Committee. “Coverys recognizes the burden of this on our policyholders and utilized the Foundation grant-making efforts to support the opportunity to make a positive impact on healthcare outcomes.”

The Foundation received an overwhelming response to the request for proposals. At the submission deadline, 34 proposals were submitted from organizations across the country, including hospitals, healthcare systems, academic medical centers, universities, technology companies and professional associations. Submissions focused on a variety of categories from different locations of care and levels of care, to specific conditions, as well as those dealing with improved communication skills and transition of care processes. The response to the request for proposals affirms the need to support projects providing solutions to improve the diagnostic process.
