Getting Excited about MLA17: A First-Time Attendee’s Perspective

VisualDx is proud to support MLA ’17 where we will be exhibiting at booth 522 and hosting a Sunrise Seminar.  In addition, two of our staff medical librarians will head to Seattle to take part. Sigriet Ferrer will be attending this annual conference for the first time and she writes about what she’s looking forward to experiencing.

My name is Sigriet Ferrer, and I’m a Medical Research Librarian at VisualDx. I can’t wait to go to the annual MLA meeting for the first time!

There are so many reasons why I’m excited about attending this spectacular event. First off, the MLA conference is taking place in lovely Seattle. It will be my first time attending the MLA conference and the first time visiting Seattle! Second, this is one of the best professional development opportunities available for medical librarians. The MLA conference provides health information professionals an opportunity to promote their organization, to network and to learn about innovations, trends, and important issues relevant within the health sciences.

Julia F. Sollenberger’s plenary session, “Looking Inside Ourselves: A Culture of Kindness,” is one of the lectures that I’m most looking forward to attending. The theme of the lecture is something that intrigues me, and I’m quite impressed with Mrs. Sollenberger’s extensive professional background. For one, she’s a Rochester, NY, resident (like me!) who began her career at the National Library of Medicine and is currently associate vice president and director of the Medical Center Libraries and Technologies and associate professor of the Public Health Services at the University of Rochester! With over 37 years of leadership experience at the University of Rochester Medical Center, it will be fascinating to hear what professional and interpersonal advice for success she may have to share with the MLA community.

I first heard about Hope Jahren in 2016 when her internationally acclaimed memoir Lab Girl was published. Needless to say, once I heard that she will be presenting a plenary session at MLA this year, I was beyond ecstatic! Hope Jahren is a geobiologist, geochemist, science advocate, and inspiration to everyone within the science community. As a medical librarian and strong advocate of the sciences, I believe it’s essential to promote and raise awareness of science, make it more accessible to the general public, and also celebrate and empower fellow women scientists.

Most librarians can identify with the challenge of how to best make data easy to find in the most time-efficient manner. Collecting, storing, and preserving data and staying abreast of technology trends and tools are all absolute musts for the health information professional! After reading MLA’s publication “Guide to Data Management for Librarians” by Lisa Federer, I’m excited about attending this book discussion and learning of new tools and strategies that I can incorporate into my workflow in order to better assist my organization.
